This video discusses a recent study conducted by Dr Gail Alvares which looks at how sleep problems may not only affect an autistic child but also their parents’ sleep quality and mental health.
Up to 50 to 80% of carers report sleep difficulties in children on the autistic spectrum. This has major impact on their quality of life, stress, mood, and the child’s ability to participate in everyday activities.
This study reveals that parents of children who have sleep difficulties are more stressed and they have lower self-reported quality of sleep. As stated in the video more research on this is needed to help support these families and improve their overall quality of life.
